Most member activities are arranged on a personal basis by direct contact. KSA facilitates the meeting of like minded people but it is up to individuals to follow up and pursue the real benefit of KSA membership by using the monthly meetings, organised flotillas and member messaging system to find and develop contacts leading to friendships and teams. This is where the membership can really work together to meet the needs of skippers, crew and friends, and is the essence of KSA. Skippers often need help for passage legs or day trips and by attending meetings and flotillas you can develop contacts which can lead to you being invited to crew for day sails, weekend jaunts or for much longer sailing and boating trips. Trips to Provincetown, Maine, Nova Scotia and down to Chesapeake are not uncommon. Weekend day sails around Long Island Sound, the Hudson River, New York Harbor and the Jersey Coast are also popular amongst club members. It is important to be proactive as a new member to meet skippers and crew, and make sure that skippers know when you are available or that crew know you when are planning to go out. The member messaging boards are ideal for this once you have met a few people in person as you can keep an eye out for activity in your area or with people you have already met and respond directly. KSA members are spread out from the Jersey shores through Long Island Sound and towards Rhode Island so opportunities abound in many different locations. We also have members who dont live in the area who can link us with other clubs to widen the opportunities for travel and experience of other waters. Some members charter boats either locally, elsewhere in the US or abroad, particularly the Mediterranean or Caribbean, and once you have developed some contacts within the club this can be a great resource for water based vacations.
