Club Flotillas are the best way to get to meet many members and their friends in one go. The Flotillas are usually held over a long weekend and involve a number of boats - sail and power - gathering at a pre determined, organised location. Current average attendance would be between ten and fifteen vessels between 20' and 50' in length. Attendees will take part in several organised and some un-organised activities - one of the vessels will usually host a cocktail party on the first night. It has to be one of the larger vessels as there can be quite a lot of people!! There is usually a 'pot luck' dinner during the weekend where boats will provide an entree, salad or desert, or a Club sponsored barbeque on the beach nearby. Un-organised activities can be casual get togethers on another boat; windsurfing; beachcoming; volleyball; running; swimming; exploring; boat repairs; or even going sailing. Sometimes you could spend all day visiting different boats, lingering on each one for a drink or some snacks and meeting other members and their guests. Some people come for the whole weekend, others may come the day but arrangments have to be made beforehand as some venues can be difficult to get to from the shore and water transport from a beach or dock may have to be planned. The trip to and from the flotilla location is one of the most enjoyable and memorable activities for many people especially if it is a first time to that destination. Boats will generally fly a large Rainbow Flag and this can be quite a sight as boats converge on the final legs to a destination. The same applies at the time of leaving as boats leave together and then diverge off to their home ports. There is alot of organisation and planning that goes into a Flotilla event, and it should always be remembered that the safety of boats and crew is paramount and the club will cancel an event at the last minute if weather or sea conditions are deemed to be unsuitable. Close monitoring of the weather forecasts will give an indication of what to expect, and the Club will issue regular bulletins via the Member's messaging group in the run up to an event. |
