What's KSA?

How Do I Find Out More Information?

Send an e-mail to information@ksa-nyc.org    Steve Nardoni our Membership Coordinator will get back to you.  Dues are only $45.00 per year for single and $70 per year for a couple.  Membership includes participating in a Sailing 101 class which by itself is worth the amount of the dues.

Who's in KSA?

We've grown from the initial 13 to over 200 members now...Gays and Lesbians.  We're here because of our our love for the outdoors and the water.  But most of all, we're here because of the people...we're a fun, friendly and down to earth group...check out one of our events to find out for yourself!

Do I need to own a boat to join?

Absolutely not!  In fact, most members don't own boats.  Those with boats - the Captains - are often looking for crew to help them sail.  KSA prides itself on working hard to get new members and newbies out on the water.

I don't know Port from Starboard!

Hey, neither did we when we started!  But everyone has to start somewhere.  Why don't you sign up for one of our free, on-water, Sailing 101 classes?  They're given by many of our KSA members and cover such things as water safety, understanding the wind, how to set sail, and of course, the meaning of all those funny sailing terms.  And like all of our events, they're fun.

What kind of events do you have?

There's lots of stuff going on with KSA!  Stop by one of our monthly meetings  - the second Tuesday of each month - to see how friendly our Captains and Crew really are.   In addition to a great dinner, you'll learn about our upcoming events:

  •  KSA boats stretch from the Jersey shore throughout Long Island Sound and Captains are often looking for Crew for weekend day sails.
  • We also organize big flotillas where 10 to 15 boats make for longer ports of call like Atlantic Highlands, NJ (have you ever sailed down the East River? its so cool), Stonington, CT (can you say nautical village?), City Island or Oyster Bay.
  • And, of course, there's our famous Pride events!

When did KSA start?

In August 1994, 13 gay guys met for an evening sail in Jersey City aboard a 38-foot Irwin cruiser.  They set out into New York Harbor just before twilight, slipped beneath the Verazano Bridge and returned to the Battery later than night as the bright lights of the World Trade Center reflected on the water.

They came together that night as strangers, with only the love of boating in common. Over the course of the evening, they were all laughing, reminiscing, camping it up and sharing wonderful food. They returned to the dock late that night, amid lots of hugs and kisses, knowing this was the start of something very special.  This was the birth of KSA!
